Only In Terengganu

Malaysia is always famous for its variety of foods. Although the whole country is like a huge dining place, there are still foods ‘belongs’ to certain places or places that stand out as representing some particular cooking or foods.

Today, Travelympics would like to bring you to explore some local food in Terengganu. Since i am from Kemaman, i would like you to enjoy my Kemaman masterpiece.

Keropok Lekor is very synonym with Terengganu. some people called it fish sausages but people in Terengganu named it as " keropok" and pronounced it as "kepok". Keropok Lekor can be eaten in two ways either steamed or deep fried. Both of the ways have a different taste but i personally preferred the deep fried keropok. The chewy taste of keropok lekor made with fresh fish such as Ikan Parang and Ikan Tamban added with homemade chili sauce make it taste really delicious. I can't say more, you really have to try!

Don't judge this tempting food as Mee Soup that you always eat at the roadside stall. It's Mee Chalong. This food is also available in Terengganu. The soup is made from the extract of the fresh fish meat and keropok as the meatball.

My first attempt of this soup was about 3 years ago, my mom tried to cook her first mee chalong for the family. I really don't have idea how fish extract can be made as soup, the smell of the fish might be in. so, i was afraid to try. After a few times my mom cooked this, i lastly told myself that this kind of fish soup might taste good. Then, i gave my first shot.Guess what? It's really delicious!!!!!!There was no fish smell at all. How i regret not to try this earlier.

Have you ever taste this? This is sata. The taste is so yummy with the fresh processed fish meat. It is made from deboned fish meats blended together mixed several other items such as black pepper and onions before wrapped in banana leave and left to be grilled above charcoal fire and it has been made in triangular shaped.

Otak-otak which is also popular in other state but here in Terengganu they wrapped the small pieces of fish meat and marinated with various of spices in the coconut leaves. The smell of grilled Otak-otak will make you want some more.

This are the warung and restaurant you should try. Located in Geliga, Kemaman Terengganu.

Warung Sata Otak-Otak che wan. This is among the most popular place in Kemaman in selling those kind of food.

Restaurant Aziz Satar. Very popular place in Kemaman.

Let's travel to Terengganu!

3 days and 2 nights at Pangkor Island

Hi guys,,its time to travel again!
So, this time we would like to bring you to Pangkor Island which located in state of Perak.

Pangkor, with its charming mix of fishing settlements and resorts, is a fascinating and convenient holiday destination. It presents the visitor with a rare chance to live near fishermen and observe their lifestyle and also to simply enjoy the fine beaches and resort amenities.

Day 1

We took the road from iium, Gombak to Lumut, Perak by our university bus. We left the university around 8.30 am and reached there at 2.25. We are so lucky because the ferry was already there.

 The Ferry - Duta Pangkor

The ferry only charged for adult which is RM 10 for return trip meanwhile its free for kids. The ferry services are not too crowded on that day but packed enough to full utilize the seats. The journey took about half an hour to reach the island.

Once arrived, we were approched by a group of taxi drivers. Taxi services was just outside the jetty itself. The taxi charged was RM 20 per van which could fill about 10 person in the van.

A lot of pinky van. So cute!

Then, we were heading to Teluk Nipah which will be our place to stay. The journey did not take too long but fill with the challenging road as we had to climb the hills. We reached the resort which called Pangkor Indah Beach Resort at 3.30 pm.

The Travelympics team. Tired enough but yet so happy!

After checked in, it already at 4.00 pm. We were so hungry and decided to take our late luncheon at nearest stall just in front our resort. We took a seat at one stall which have a nice view of sea and ordered 3 Nasi Ayam and 3 Iced Lemon Tea. The foods were so-so but enough to full packed our stomach today. Guess how much it cost? its RM 21! Its really expensive here because Teluk Nipah have caught so much attention from the tourists.

In the evening, we have to start our site visit project. 5 groups were divided into five different zone which were Teluk Dalam, Pasir Bogak, Teluk Nipah, Pekan Pangkor and etc. We were assigned to make a survey and approched the tourist with the questionnaire.

Approching people for site survey

Survey ended at 7.30 pm. Enjoy the moments with the TEAMates

At night, we had a dinner at the resort and having a short briefing and sharing moments with our lecturer. We ended our day 1 at 11 pm.

Day 2

As everybody got enough rest.. we started our day with breakfast at the resort itself. Then, everyone moved to their respective zone.

The hornbills that were lingering around our resort.

These are the interesting pictures in day 2.

Such a tradition method to measure the water in Teluk Dalam.. (unique right?)
Pangkor Island Beach Resort private jetty at Teluk Dalam
The Dutch Fort (Kota Belanda) is one of the attraction
 in Teluk Gedung (Pulau pangkor)

view at Teluk Dalam

Here in Pangkor, activities such as snorkerlling, island hoping, and etc caught so much attention from the tourists especially in Teluk Nipah. The beach boys are ready to serve you and bring you to have a new experience that you never had before.

 Snorkeling

Jet ski

There're a few more activities offers such as Mable and Banana Boat. Here are the price list og those activities:

Snorkeling + Island Hoping : RM15
Banana Boat : RM 15
Jet ski : Rm15
Mable : RM15

The prices are depand on how many people would like to join. The more the people the cheaper the price. and you can also try to negotiate with the beach boys so that the price will be reduce.

Live night at Teluk Nipah
Day 3

In the morning, everybody was very excited to play again. Enjoyed the last day with those activities again. Then we departed from Jetty Pangkor to Pekan Lumut at 12.30 pm.

Bye Pangkor..Till we meet again.

At Lumut, we found that all the seafood handmade such as dried squid, dried fish are cheaper in Pekan Lumut than Pangkor itself. So, it is advisable to buy them at Lumut.

Here some tips :
  • If you're in budget travel/backpackers, it is advisable to bring your own food/drinks because foods here are a bit pricey.
  • wear socks if you're doing snorkelling or coral will eatyour foot.
Thats all from us now.
